Prominent or protruding ears can affect many people’s self-esteem; man or woman young or old. The procedure, known as otoplasty surgery, can make the ears less prominent, reduce their size and repair damage from accidents.
Ear shaping can be done under general or local anesthesia, usually as an outpatient procedure. An incision is made behind the ear where the ear meets your head. Cartilage and skin are usually removed or the ears are secured behind with a few thin stitches.
The procedure takes about an hour, you are expected to wear the supportive ear band for 2-6 weeks and not get the area wet for 7 days after the procedure. Significant swelling and bruising will be minimal due to the treatment area, healing is not always a symmetrical process, a slight difference between the right and left sides is not uncommon and usually improves over time. Absolute symmetry cannot be guaranteed and it is best to avoid constant comparison. It is also not uncommon for patients to need ear pin surgery in only one ear, this is called uni-otoplasty.
